Antonio S.

How To Access Your Linux Partitions From Windows

[Windows only] We’ve all been in this situation before. A lot of times. Imagine you have a dual boot system, running Linux and Windows. You spend quite a lot of time on your Linux partition. On the occasion that you boot into Windows, you realize that the important file you have been working on is saved on your Linux partition. Now to get that file, you could boot back into your Linux partition, save it on your Windows partition and boot back into Windows – but that’s a drag.

This is where Ext2Read comes in. Ext2Read is a Free & Open Source Software which allows you to browse your Linux partitions in a very Windows Explorer-esque interface. Unlike other tools that we’ve covered before, Ext2Read also supports ext4 filesystem, even if extents feature is enabled. Like the name suggests – Ext2Read can only read, not write to the partitions – so in case you are paranoid about the tool causing data corruption to your Linux partitions, you can drop those fears.

Using the tool is pretty easy – just download the file from its SourceForge page, and run it. Windows Vista/ Windows 7 users will have to run it as an Administrator to Ext2Read to work correctly. To do this, just right click on the file and Select ‘Run as Adminstrator’

Once you start the application, it will show all your Linux partitions on the left and the files on the respective partitions on the right.

To transfer a file just right click on it and select save.

Overall, the application is pretty good, and quite honestly, the only negative thing about it is the way the icons are arranged, especially if you have lots of files with varying filename lengths – in which case it looks pretty shabby.

Techie Buzz Verdict:

Ext2Read is probably one of the best tools to read data from your Linux partition. If you dual boot your system with Windows & Linux, this is a must have tool.

Techie Buzz Rating: 4/5 (Excellent)

Barometer: SaaS Stock Indexes - The Future is On Demand

It's a Friday and the Salesforce.com quarterly numbers are in. The company posted record revenues.

The record revenues show the growth of the SaaS market. SaaS is the future of software but it is also in the mainstream. Profit margins will decrease as competition heightens. For now, though, the picture looks pretty bright.

Sponsor

Two indexes give a picture of the market's health. The Software Insider Index includes both on-premise and SaaS services. SaaS Index Insights is a pure SaaS index. Bernard Lunn uses the report to explain the benefits and the critiques of SaaS companies.

Both reports show significant growth for the SaaS markets with Salesforce.com still remaining as perhaps the company with the greatest potential.

Software Insider Index

The index includes 22 publicly traded companies. All of the companies showed year-over-year quarterly growth. But the SaaS providers grew the most. Every company grew 14% to 26%.

Ray Wang sees a few trends emerging:

SaaS vendors continue to grow in mid to high double digit growth rates for subscription revenue. SuccessFactors (26.81%), Salesforce.com (24.78%), and Concur (20.49%) moved past 20% year over year quarterly growth.

Ariba ($93.2M) nears the $100M per quarter revenue benchmark as Blackboard ($101.5M) continues to grow from this achievement in Q1 2010.

RightNow (19.58%), NetSuite (16.83%), Ultimate Software (15.67%), and Taleo (14.63%) all showed solid quarters of growth, though these growth percentages show slight declines.

SaaS Index Insights

Bernard Lunn uses his report to discuss the value of SaaS. He writes:

What Investors Should Focus On During This Phase Of The
Transition To SaaS

We believe that we are in the "tornado" phase of the transition to SaaS.
This is a reference to Geoffrey Moore's series of books such as
Crossing The Chasm. The tornado phase is when the market is
growing fast. This is when winners emerge and create a lot of value.

In short, growth is all. Investors prize revenue momentum above all.
Optimizing profits by keeping costs low is a lower priority. That can
wait until markets have anointed a clear winner and growth starts to
slow.

However, a lack of profitability and cash flow is a cause for concern.
The SaaS model at scale (above $50m in annual revenues) should be
highly profitable. If a company is losing money, that is major red flag. If
a company has a profitability ratio that is significantly lower than the
average that is a cause for concern. If the revenue momentum is
strong enough, investors can look beyond what may be a short-term
drag on profits due to an investment in growth.

In short, the primary factor we focus on is revenue momentum. If
we see that momentum we look at other factors.

No surprises really. SaaS companies will continue to run at a far faster pace than on-premise counterparts.

The numbers speak for themselves.

Discuss

The AdMax SEO Toolbar: New Multi-Feature SEO Tool for FireFox

The AdMax SEO Toolbar is a new-launched tool that consolidates the best SEO tools into a single browser plugin. This is also the first FireFox addon that addressed mobile SEO as well (it features mobile keyword rankings and mobile link building tools).

Let’s take a detailed look at the toolbar features and options:

To start off, download and install the toolbar from here. After restarting FireFox you should see the toolbar there:

Page Speed at a Glance

The first most prominent section of the toolbar is the one showing you the page speed:

Load time,

Page size,

Number of requests

Clicking on the section reveals the details: which exactly files were loaded and the size of each:

Current Page External Metrics

The next toolbar section lists SEO’s favorite numbers, namely:

Page Google Toolbar PageRank;

Yahoo! SiteExplorer “Links to domain” number;

Yahoo! SiteExplorer “Links to page” number;

Yahoo! SiteExplorer “Indexed Pages” number;

The number of Dmoz listings;

Domain age;

Clicking any metric will take you to the actual result page which, by default, opens in a new tab.

Toolbar “Actions” Section

The toolbar also allows to perform some actions that could speed up your working process:

Never care to look for the comment field: use easyComment button (create multiple profiles to let the tool pre-fill your name, email and URL);

Highlight on-page nofollow attribute;

View page source;

Get the page info;

Check your keyword position in Google (using a built-in tool)

Quickly perform a keyword research (in Google Adwords and Google Search-based tools)

Access the “link building tool”

The latter deserves a more detailed explanation:

Link Building Tool

The built-in link building tool consists of three sections:

Backlink Builder: this tool takes advantage of Google’s link building queries, which combined with your base term, allow to search for various link building opportunities;

Blog Commenting: this section offers access to “dofollow” blog database;

Directory submission: search for relevant directories here.

The tool has been just released and is still in beta but it looks like a very useful utility, what do you think?

Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal.

The AdMax SEO Toolbar: New Multi-Feature SEO Tool for FireFox

I’ve just been scanning through the internet section of Ofcom’s latest report on The Communications Market 2010. As always, it’s an essential read and this year the body have done a beautiful job in publishing it online with unique URLs for each passage of the document, and downloadable CSV and PDF files for each piece of data.

Here are what I think are the key points for those specifically interested in online journalism and publishing:

1: Mobile is genuinely significant: 23% of UK users now access the web on mobile phones (but 27% still have no access to the web on any device).

Implication: We should be thinking about mobile as another medium, with different generic qualities to print, broadcast or web, and different consumption and distribution patterns.

2: 23% of time spent online is on social networks – and there has been a 10% rise in the numbers with a social media profile across all demographics. Mobile emerges as an important platform for social media access, particularly among 16-24-year-olds. Twitter is has 1m more unique visitors than MySpace, but Facebook has 20m more than Twitter.

Implication: We should have social network strategies not only around distributing content but also commercial possibilities such as embedded advertising, diverting marketing budget, etc.

3: Display advertising grew slightly, but search advertising continues to gain market share.

Implication: Not good news for publishers – the question to ask might be: why? Is it because of the mass market search engines enjoy? Or the measurability of being able to advertise against search terms? Is that something news websites can offer too – or something similar?

4: 48% of 24-34 year olds use the internet to keep up with news – more than any other age group – older people are least interested in news online.

Implication: confirms not only that our online audiences are different demographically, but young people are interested in news. What’s missing is an elaboration of what they consider ‘keeping up with news’ – that doesn’t necessarily mean checking a news website, but might include letting news come to them via social networks, email, or finding ‘news’ about their friends.

5: Google literacy - only 20% think search results are unbiased & accurate; 54% are critical.

Implication: surprising, and challenges some assumptions.

6: Google Image Search becomes a significant search engine on its own, above all other general search engines (Bing, Yahoo, MSN) apart from Google’s main search portal. Curiously, YouTube is not listed, although it is widely known that it accounts for more searches than Yahoo! I am guessing it was not classified separately as a search engine (it is, however, the second most popular search term, after ‘Facebook’).

Implication: emphasises the importance of SEO for images, but also the growing popularity of vertical search engines. A news organisation that created an effective search facility either for its own site (most news website search facilities are not very good) or in its field could reap some benefits longer term.

7: UGC is changing – there is an overall decline in uploading and adding content. “The only age group in which this figure did not fall since 2009 was 45-64 year olds, while the number
of 15-24 year olds claiming to upload content fell by 10 percentage points.”

That said, in the detail there are increases in the numbers of users who have created UGC in certain categories – there was an 8% increase in those who have commented on blogs, for example, and a 6% increase in those who have uploaded images to a website. It may be that UGC activity is being concentrated in social networks (the numbers who have created a social network profile doubled from 22% to 44%)

Implication: There seems to be a limit to the people who will contribute content online (even where there were increases, this appears to be drawn from the proportion of people who previously wanted to contribute content online – see image at top of post). And these appear to be gravitating towards particular communities, i.e. Facebook. There may be a limited window of opportunity for attracting these users to contribute to your site – or it may be that publishers have to work harder to attract them with functionality, etc.

8: News and information is the 4th most popular content category – although ‘search and communities’ are lumped together in first place. Time spent on news and information is significantly lower than other categories, however. Likewise, the BBC and Associated Newspapers both feature in the top 20 sites (along with more general portals AOL, Sky and Yahoo!) but have lower time per person.

Implication: the news industry has an ongoing ‘stickiness’ problem. People are clearly interested in news, but don’t stick around. Traditional cross-publishing and shovelware approaches don’t appear to be working. We need to learn from the areas where people spend most time – such as social networks. Research is needed into media types that appear to have a strong record here, such as audio slideshows, wikis and databases.

World’s Longest Email Address [DYK]

World’s longest email address is 345 characters long and belongs to Peter Craig. The address has actually been put together by appending a ridiculously long sub-domain and using that as par tof the email address. Here is the complete address:

contact-admin-hello-webmaster-info-services-peter-crazy-but-oh-so-ubber-cool-english-alphabet-loverer-abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz@please-try-to.send-me-an-email-if-you-can-possibly-begin-to-remember-this-coz.this-is-the-longest-email-address-known-to-man-but-to-be-honest.this-is-such-a-stupidly-long-sub-domain-it-could-go-on-forever.pacraig.com

The address has practically no use, unless we count the effort to get attention for having the longest email address.

On the other hand, when it comes to world’s shortest email address, there are probably many candidates. Any email address associated with domains like in.com or 1.fm can claim to have a 6 character email address.

[Via Gizmodo]

Share: Comment on This Post | Tweet This | Share on Facebook | Save to Delicious | Stumble This | Digg This | Reddit This

TAGS: DYK, Email, Longest, world

World’s Longest Email Address [DYK] originally appeared on Techie Buzz written by Tehseen Baweja on Wednesday 18th August 2010 11:40:01 AM under Did You Know.
